Didn't quite make the cut ...

"Jaws"

Chief Brody: "We're going to need a bigger boat."

... This is perhaps the most-quoted line from a great (but still under-appreciated) classic. I was going to say we need a bigger boat - like a battleship - if we're going to really kill all the gators in the swamp. Or maybe a giant fleet of those air boats.

And an overcrowded immigrant boat isn’t cutting the mustard. Hundreds drowned again recently in the Med but the sub that vanished with its wealthy occupants sightseeing the titanic gets all of the attention and money spent ( more money laundering?) “ investigating” …the people have to end all this.

It now occurs to me that the first "Alien' movie and the sequel also have themes that fit our Covid times. In the movies, we learn that the government wants to bring back those aliens so they can study them, learn from them and .... use them as a weapon!

Also, the director of the first Alien movie, Ridley Scott, also directed the great movie "Black Hawk Down," which also shows the consequences of FUBAR government policies.

I found this post in the reader comments at another site. This is a good movie to add to my list:

"there is a point in the 1944 film 'Gaslight' where ingrid bergman realizes that Charles Boyer has been brainwashing her.....that awakening is happening today.

everyone grab the movie and watch!!!

Reader Justin emailed me some good additions: The Dirty Harry Movies, "Death Wish" and an obvious omission, "1984." Plus, "Harold and Maude," which I've actually never seen but need to watch. Thanks for all the additions!

Great post, insightful and entertaining, many thanks for this.... and may I add my own contribution for those who may be interested... https://thesidewaysthinker.substack.com/p/rosemarys-baby-this-is-really-happening

A deep dive into Rosemary's Baby through the lens of current events.

My husband and I watched Rosemary's Baby for the first time 2 years ago and holy cow I did not expect it to basically reveal today's world so accurately. It's like they told everyone what Hollywood and the Deep State were all about but the world thought it was too unbelievable and just fiction.

Thanks, I'd love to learn your thoughts on my piece in that case!

Movies are based on books or screenplays and their authors are either very imaginative or themes are chosen for them to write about. People often tip their hand on their intentions so IMO, I can see an overlap between what makes a good movie while subconsciously spilling the beans on intent.

My husband doesn’t understand my admiration for Rosemary’s Baby.😂

That's a good one for this list too!

"The Manchurian Candidate" Preferably the 1962 version. Maybe the remakes; they didn't impress me as much as the original.

Wow!, all these comments and no mention of Logan's Run? Our ruling class is currently implementing Carousel upon the global population and people don't want to believe it's happening.

Another excellent, not well known, very topical film to our times is Colossus: The Forbin Project

Ahem! "They Live" needs to be there!

It's there now, at least in the Reader Comments. Another one I haven't seen, but will now add to my Netflix list. Thanks!

What? Oh, you're going to love it. It was meant to be John Carpenter's take on Reaganomics helping the rich and sticking it to the poor. However, it naturally makes a completely different point.

Hear kinds of posts are my favorite. So easy to read and so true. I can attest to your love of these movies-- many I would never have seen without you sharing them with me. Great post!

Yep. You must love me because you watched the movies I make you watch. But you return the favor by telling me what great books I should read.

Chauncey Gardner DID get elected, but it took a while. 2020 to be exact, if what happened can be called an "election". I prefer the sign I saw somewhere on-line, I think it was actually in front of some business. It said "Joe Biden was not elected. He was installed. Like a toilet".

Bill,

I wrote something comparing this to The Wizard of Oz, and asked people to compare the Scamdemic to other books or movies that resembled it.

I didn't post it yet. I don't know if I will. I don't know if I like it enough to post it.

Email it to me and I'll tell you what I think.

Good choices. Sometimes Hollywood gives us something worthwhile.

I remember Warren Beatty’s film Shampoo being a very depressing cultural analysis, wonder if it has something to say now.

I need to go back and watch that again. It's been a long time.

Ripley was right. we figuratively need to do exactly that. If we don't, the lizards and their useful tools will have gotten away with mass murder. And they'll do it again.....and again.

Bill, add the the movie Mr Smith Goes to Washington. The bad guy, James Taylor creates all kinds of retribution against Senator Jefferson Smith by creating a nonstop publicity campaign designed to bamboozle the public.

I should. I actually thought about that movie when I was making this list. Thanks for the suggestion! It's a good one.
