Bill, thanks for laying this out so clearly. I hear you on the metrics — it’s frustrating to see the growth stall while Substack as a whole is booming, especially when it feels like the platform favors the status-quo narratives. Your point about real inflation hitting subscriptions is spot-on, and I think you’re also right that contrarian voices simply don’t have anywhere else to go.

I admire your commitment to keep posting despite the losses. That kind of persistence is exactly what independent journalism needs. Here’s hoping you hit that 300 mark again and the work you’re doing matters, even if the algorithms and broader trends don’t always reflect it.

Ray Horvath, "The Source" :)'s avatar

Substack has never been a source for survival. It was, and is, a honey pot, and every respectable author must have experienced losses, especially that of "paid subscribers." It doesn't make me respectable on its own, but on my stack, where everything is free, contributions went down from $5,600 a year to $3,800 in a matter of weeks. Part of it was that SS changed the algorithm for calculating annual revenues, but losing paying supporters was certainly part of the process.

People's revenue is also diminishing, so fewer and fewer can afford to support authors. I may have been shadow-banned for all I care, but at 5,400 readers, I would think, I only attract minor trolls and important details seem to be hidden from everyone, except from those specifically looking for them, which happened, when I pointed out that the Russians, the Iranians, the Chinese, and "Maduro" were all in the same boat:

Ray, I agree with you that Substack was never meant to be anyone’s financial lifeboat, and you’re right that fewer people can afford to support writers right now. Inflation squeezes everyone, readers included.

Where I still get uneasy is that the decline doesn’t seem evenly distributed. Some writers are exploding while others, especially those outside the approved narratives, are quietly fading from view. Whether that’s algorithms, audience fatigue, or simple market shifts, the effect is the same: fewer eyes on dissenting ideas.

I’m not expecting Substack to save anyone, but I do think it matters whether independent and contrarian voices remain visible at all. If we disappear into the cracks, the “marketplace of ideas” gets a lot smaller and a lot more obedient.

Appreciate you sharing your numbers and your perspective. None of this is simple, and I don’t think any of us are imagining that something has changed.

Thank you, Kim! This is a description I've been searching for:

"Where I still get uneasy is that the decline doesn’t seem evenly distributed. Some writers are exploding while others, especially those outside the approved narratives, are quietly fading from view."

Substack trends should be "evenly distributed" and affect "conservative" or "contrarian" writers the exact same as liberal writers or those who accept all the official narratives.

Also, why aren't just as many conservative citizens discovering Substack as are the number that is apparently discovering liberal writers?

The metrics are now clearly skewed by politics/ideology. And the metrics have flipped 180 degrees from 2020-2022 to today. This has to be "by design."

Kim Di Giacomo's avatar

Thanks, Bill, I’m glad that framing resonated. That’s exactly what keeps nagging at me too. If this were just about the economy, we’d expect everyone to be hit more or less the same, not a clean ideological split in who’s growing and who’s shrinking.

And you’re right, it makes no sense that only one side is “discovering” Substack now. The flip from 2020–2022 to today is too sharp to shrug off as random. Something in the ecosystem clearly changed, and it did so in a non-neutral way.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

There is a clear demarcation in who is thriving and who is sucking wind. This can’t be an accident or organic. This was the goal and the plan. This is why my metrics reversed and this is why the value of Substack has increased many fold. Substack is now politically aligned with the powers that be. The threat of the Covid contrarians has been neutralized.

Kim Di Giacomo's avatar

I get why you see it that way, Bill, because the split really does look stark. When outcomes line up this neatly with politics, it is hard not to suspect intent rather than coincidence.

What worries me most is not just who is winning or losing, but what that means for readers who think they are getting a wide range of views when they may not be. If contrarian voices are slowly pushed to the margins, that is not a healthy information ecosystem for anyone, no matter where they sit politically.

Ray Horvath, "The Source" :)'s avatar

I concur.

Those with "hundreds" or even "thousands" of "paid subscribers are most likely funded from the black budget. Recently, I've been having a hard time finding anything authentic.

As long as voices like mine remain "small enough," they won't be targeted much, except by trolls, bots, the lack/misdirection of e-mail deliveries, and the occasional shadow-banning.

I am saving up for moving to warmer climates, but it doesn't look like there will be many available in the future. Already in 2011, when I wanted to start my own web hosting, T1-4 connections were unavailable for mortals like me.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

I think (hope) that the Powers that Be do ignore you/us if your reach is deemed sufficiently insignificant to qualify as a potential "threat" to the Status Quo or to our leaders' efforts to complete all their other control initiatives.

csofand's avatar

Bill, I sure do hope you are still here a year from now. You are a great person that has stuck to his beliefs, which in turn inspires others to do the same. I personally have appreciated the generous support you give to other writers. It is rare to have someone like you putting aside competitiveness for a greater good.

My wish is that readers of means will umderstand the service you do and help support the cause.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

Thank you. I have always viewed this as a war of narratives and know it will take a team effort to prevail. Many of the most important writers - like yourself - aren’t reaching enough eyeballs. The reach enhancer of the cross-post is not used enough imo.

Linelle MacDougal's avatar

Interesting Bill ,even on Instagram , one contrarian- a naturopath- who you may appreciate for her no nonsense approach to all the same issues you have written about since the virus debacle, is reporting and showing images /videos of Drs who are now calling themselves "functional" Drs - as they spout how they are "different" and pretending ( while wearing masks) to be more wholistic for everyone . She says she wants to "throw up in her mouth" when she sees these people shilling for big pharma under the ruse of a disguise . I think Bill , it's important to write, as is your talent and integrity that has not waivered since the beginning ;it's about the truth- unfortunately not a lot of money to be made with that idea.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

Thank you, Linelle. I do have a solid and loyal core of paid subscribers like you. I also have about 20 readers who routinely support my work with kofi “tips.” I worry that revenue stream might have also been targetted.

Susie's avatar

Bill - Thank you for sharing your Substack journey. I didn't realize how difficult it was becoming for all the creators here. Good luck with everything in the future.

ArnoldF's avatar

Bill, while I am not a paid subscriber, I have been with you for 3 years. Thank you for your courageous positions and exposing the truth. Recommend stay on focus. Expose the covxx lies and the lockstep. This is humanity's hope that this 'Rainbow Six' operation/perpetor(s) are caught, exposed and brought to justice.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

Thanks, Arnold. Three years reading my “save the world” efforts is flattering.

Ray Horvath, "The Source" :)'s avatar

It does look like the waves are closing in on free speech on Substack. The first sign of that was when several months ago, the "Search" function became next to useless. The other one made it difficult to become a subscriber; instead, SS invented "followers."

A centralization of power scheme has certainly started, if you add up Venezuela, Iran, and Canada. It all goes in the same direction (yes, I keep challenging "sacrosanct and bogus narratives"; just used the rare word, "sacrosanct" in my last post, which summarizes my findings the links between medical diagnoses and treatments at https://rayhorvaththesource.substack.com/p/genetic-conditions-madications-causing):

https://rayhorvaththesource.substack.com/p/the-whole-world-is-a-game

I'm not so optimistic about Substack. Many, previously good, authors have been captured or replaced, possibly with AI.

On my end, I wouldn't count my "success" rate in terms of paid subscribers, especially because everything on my stack is free. I have a bit more than 5,400 readers, out of which about 3,500 are subscribers, and my 42 "paid" supporters exceed the average percentage of contributions on Substack.

I apologize and please, allow me to respectfully disagree that there is a "we"; there is no one with the power to change anything. The "do-not-comply" calls were mostly bad for the people:

https://rayhorvaththesource.substack.com/p/do-not-comply-no-kidding

I am a subscriber, but the contents of my posts are usually unique, and free, so I gratefully accept free access from fellow authors, but on my Social Security payments, can't afford to pay anyone.

Still, good luck to Bill!

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

Thanks, Ray. For some reason, my articles don't get nearly as many "likes" or Reader Comments as they did, say, two years ago. These metrics are important to me as they tell me that at least some people ARE reading my dispatches.

this is probably the desired result of a clandestine strategy to thwart or suppress the reach of citizens who actually threaten the world’s real leadership organizations.

reich and krugman having that number of subscribers tells everything.

Margaret P's avatar

You've mentioned the high numbers a couple of liberal writers have. I wonder are those paid subscriptions actually from regular people who read their columns?

As far as your losses I suspect it does have to do with the reality of the economic times. Perhaps more conservative readers are more budget conscious.

Susie's avatar

When I was employed (before I was "let go" from my office job), I used to send $100 donations to out-of-town churches to support them. But now as an unemployed retired 60-something, I simply can't tithe or support anyone anywhere anymore.

My goal is to stay retired, not go back to work like some of my elderly neighbors have done.

I continue to learn how to manage my money.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

I definitely understand. My free subscribers are very important to me. They increase my reach and can help me get other new readers. Thanks for your support!

Several writers in Australia are quitting substack because of the new biometric login. As I understand it Substack is not officially required to do it under the new "govt guidlines" . There's been talk in New Zealand for years aout doing it here...I play a game wit my grandson, they ahve found a little bit around it, where you only have to do the biometric thing if you want to chat in game. We always use phone chat anyway while playing so it doesnt bother us. The Australian Govt is being challenged in court as it was designed for under 16.......and blocks them from every social media site EXCEPT BLUESKY.....congress is supposed to supoena the american women who organised theis in Australia as its anti free speech, first amendment etc.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

Wendy, I keep reading about this new "safety" initiative, which must be even greater censorship under a new guise. It sounds Big Brotherish to me. I do believe many of the new control measures are first rolled out in nations like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. These trends are NOT funny.

As being 50% of a retired couple, our income resources are limited somewhat. Take a look around and you see everyone wants money. During the holidays, it's as if everyone is dripping with dollars and every cause must be supported. The more often they ask, the Grinchier I wanna be. It's as if everyone thinks that theirs is the only cause around.

Giving Tuesday? Right in the middle of X-mas season where your finances are already under a strain. How stupid is that? I avoid it on purpose. Although I support various causes throughout the year but none of the big time beggars like the Cancer Society. Just the little guys, relatively unknown to the mainstream.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping for the first time in the new year. Food prices have started rising again...thanks government grifters. Can I still open a fake day care in Minny? Just for some extra passive income, please. Despite what the DC Crackheads claim, inflation is still a factor for most of us who are not in the top 10%.

I think I have only 3 subscriptions on substack. None of them political. I now avoid any article title that has the word Trump in it. I am done with the political nonsense. So many authors just regurgitate what others are saying. I am not a writer but I feel your pain as the competition is ungodly. I don't like to subscribe to something like this knowing I might have to cancel in the future.

I don't know if substack can be trusted anymore. I never watch the news or the MSM or do social media. I come here to get some tidbits apart from anything I can get elsewhere. I like those who question the wacky world around us. And how soon does substack become an A/i controlled platform? Those creepy A/i retards are seeping through all the cracks.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

I'd be very interested in learning how many Substack authors have fewer than four subscribers. I would guess the vast majority of newsletter authors.

Probably 99 percent of total subscriptions come from less than one percent of newsletter authors.

Me, at one time, getting to 311 paid subscribers, probably put me in the "1 percent" - but now I'm down to 254.

Independent writers need another business model IMO.

Judy Vorfeld's avatar

You are absolutely correct. God bless you!

Re: "At least as things currently stand, the Substack Contrarians have “no where else to go.” This is true, but maybe, just maybe, contrarians can form their own club. I am not advocating that we leave substack. We still have a nice club here and maybe being under the radar is what ensures our survival. But I have a post up that lays out how a contrarians club might be formed and how it might be a good insurance policy to build something that not only serves contrarians but which is under their control rather than, as you put it, "the narrative-protecting mass" market served by hub-and-spoke platforms. I have NO paid subscribers, so nothing to lose; YMMV. If you will forgive my self promotion and want to read about it: https://friendsandpeers.substack.com/?r=2c9wzp&utm_campaign=pub-share-checklist

A Contrarians Club is an oxymoron.....no?

Only if you are contra-contrarian

My thoughts: People (who are versed in the Covid Operation) have become weary of stories that resemble "Hey, look at this evidence that <insert Covid harm> is real and the <insert Covid operative> knew about it." If one is firmly in the camp of "Yes it was a crime. I get it" then one will likely seek/follow/pay writers that are working directly towards outing and prosecuting those who committed/aided/abetted the crime (in whatever form that might take). The window of describing the crimes and getting paid for it has probably passed.

Bill Rice, Jr.'s avatar

We need to prove one thermo nuclear truth bomb. I am trying to do this with my early spread stories and embalmers’ clots stories.

Margaret P's avatar

Stick with it.

People have known about the Minnesota fraud for 10 years. Sometimes it takes time...

If you're not the one who finally sets off the truth bomb then certainly your information will be valuable for people to finally connect the dots.

I have a hard time believing that those liberals ‘subscribers’ are real humans. They’re trying to make us think there are ‘more of them than there are of us’.

Rustam's avatar

Part of it may be simply: in the early covid years, most readers like myself were desperately searching for voices of sanity - to overcome the horrific loneliness of being the last sane person in the madhouse - as we watched friends, family and colleagues all going along with this madness. Also we were searching for concretr sources of science/evidence/statistics/analysis to reassure ourselves that our common sense intuition really was right - even though it was opposite of what everyone around us was doing/believing.

However, nowadays it can often feel like all the evidence is in, we know what happened in great detail, and there is not much left to say or read. For example - very sadly IMO - Igor Chudov quit writing about a year or so ago, as he felt there was nothing much more he could say.

So many well-meaning covid-sceptic citizens may simply have exhausted their capacity to keep reading about this - or they will be reading far less than before. E.g. fpr the first few years, i was religiously reading and watching every single thing, every single day, by a large number of dissident writers and speakers - but after 6 years even i can't keep that up - it just gets too depressing, and one has to stop focusing on things we can't change and try to focus more on filling the days with positive activities the best we can.

However, the continued persistence of people like yourself is very important. And I feel the community needs to keep supporting you, and keep pushing, and not allow these crimes to be buried or forgotten. Something terribly fundamental in society became broken, and I think western civilisation will never recover without a proper reckoning. That can only happen if we keep these communities and contrarian activism alive. It is very dangerous if we allow ourselves to become complacent now - there will be plenty more increasing authoritarianism and oppression coming in near future.
